ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – The community came together around the football field to honor fallen firefighter Ryan Hummert, who once led the football team and later sacrificed his life on his first night of duty 16 years ago.

The heartfelt tribute was marked by a series of events that highlighted both the legacy of a hero and the spirit of community.

The Rockwood Summit High School football team kicked off the evening by running through a banner emblazoned with Ryan Hummert’s name. Before the game began, a moment of silence was observed to remember Hummert’s sacrifice.

Fans also participated in a special fundraiser, passing around boots to collect donations for a scholarship established in his honor by the Maplewood Fire Department. The evening saw a strong show of support from local fire departments, with Fenton, Maplewood, and Valley Park Fire Departments bringing their trucks to the event.

Captain Brian Kestler of the Maplewood Fire Department reflected on Hummert’s character, stating, “You knew that he was the guy if anything happened, that he would be there for you.”

This display of solidarity underscored the deep respect and admiration for Hummert’s legacy. In addition to honoring Hummert, the community celebrated the unveiling of a new archway at the school.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place the evening before the tribute, marking the completion of a project that began in July. The archway, crafted by Piros Signs, was designed to preserve the architectural charm of the school’s original design from 30 years ago.

Bridget Nations, executive director of the Fenton Area Chamber of Commerce, remarked, “It was really nice they could tie these two events together.”

Susan Boden, Retired PSO President, added, “It all finally came together.”

The events of the evening not only paid tribute to a hero, but also celebrated the strength and unity of the community. The new archway and the commemorative activities served as a testament to the enduring impact of Ryan Hummert’s legacy and the commitment of those who continue to honor his memory.
