ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A tragedy unfolds overnight in St. Ann after an elderly woman is killed in an intense fire at her home.
The fire broke out on the 3200 block of Krem, not far from Ashby Road. Fire crews cleared the scene earlier but St. Ann Police are still at the scene. A board-up crew is there as well. At this point, we don’t know the identity of the woman who was killed in this fire. However, St. Ann Police told FOX 2 that she was in her 70s.
The first call came in around 1:40 a.m. Fire crews from multiple fire agencies responded, including the Community Fire Protection District, West Overland, Maryland Heights, and Pattonville.
There was heavy damage to the home, especially in the living room area just inside the front door. That is where Kevin Murray, a battalion chief with the Community Fire Protection District, shared that the fire started and where the woman was found. Authorities revealed that a passerby noticed the house on fire and called 911.
Crews from the community district were the first on the scene. Murray added that they learned from a neighbor that the woman was in the home. Firefighters were able to find the woman and get her out of the burning home. She was rushed to the hospital but was not able to survive.
Murray says the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but he explained that it is accidental in nature. There does not appear to be any suspicious activity. FOX 2 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
