Elderly man fatally struck Monday on Illinois Route 3

HARTFORD, Ill. – Authorities say an elderly man was fatally struck Monday morning on Illinois Route 3 in Hartford, Illinois.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Larry L. Cox, 70, of Madison, Illinois.

The crash happened just after midnight Monday in the northbound lanes of Illinois Route 3 near Piasa Lane.

Investigators say, based on evidence found at the scene, Cox was possibly collecting aluminum cans in a traffic lane before he was struck. A preliminary analysis indicates that Cox died from blunt head and chest trauma.

According to a news release from the coroner’s office, the driver stopped near the scene of the crash and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

The Hartford Police Department and Illinois State Police are investigating the collision.
