ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – An East St. Louis, Illinois, juvenile was arrested last week in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this year in Jennings.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened in the early morning hours of January 6, near Emma and Apricot avenues, located along the northeastern edge of Memorial Park Cemetery.

Police found Jaimarcus McDaniel lying face down in the snow in an open field. McDaniel had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 17.

Homicide detectives said McDaniel was shot twice in the head, once to the left chest, twice in the right shoulder, once to the left shoulder, once to the left thigh, and once to the right forearm.

Investigators learned McDaniel, an East St. Louis resident, was driven across the river and killed. Police reviewed license plate recognition cameras and discovered a vehicle with five individuals in it going from Illinois to Missouri, and that same vehicle returning to Illinois approximately 35 minutes later with four individuals in it.

Police said Corey Brinkley (age not provided) was with two other male juveniles and a female juvenile in the car with McDaniel. Brinkley’s cellphone data puts him in Jennings at the time of the murder and then back in Illinois a short time later.

Police believe Brinkley and the other two male juveniles shot and killed McDaniel.

Brinkley was arrested on August 1.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Brinkley with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Brinkley remains jailed on a $1 million cash-only bond. He’s due in court on August 9 for a bond reduction hearing.
