ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A day after a deadly apartment fire at the Sherman Square apartments in St. Charles, it remains under investigation.

Tuesday’s blaze took the lives of Richard Martin, 79, and Mary Martin, 78. Some displaced residents were able to return to their units Wednesday.

“It was a big struggle,” Mariah Smith, apartment resident, said. “We want to know if it was an accident or not.”

She hopes investigators can determine what caused the fire.

As of Wednesday, the St. Charles Police and Fire Departments say they are still investigating the incident.

Taylor McCoy is among the residents looking for somewhere else to live. He said the apartment complex offered to place residents in open units at other complexes and added that the Red Cross provided temporary assistance.

McCoy and other residents described the Martins as kind neighbors.

“Just for their sake, I want to know what happened,” he said.
