ST. LOUIS – St. Louis CITY SC settles for a draw in its 2024 MLS regular season opener. CITY picks up one point with a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake.
Scoreless through more than 70 minutes in, Real Salt Lake’s Cristian Arango broke a long-lasting tie with the game’s first goal in the opening minute. St. Loui answered quickly with a goal from Sam Adeniran in the 79th minute.
The game had eight minutes of stoppage time after a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes. Jake Nerwinski came up with a big defensive play in the 97 minute to prevent a potential late tie-breaking goal from Real Salt Lake.
St. Louis held off a strong effort from Real Salt Lake, who outshot and outpassed CITY while with ball possesion for roughly 60% of the match.
Tim Parker left the game in the first half with an apparent injury and did not return.
Roman Burki saved 13 shots. CITY announced an attendance of 22,500 for the season opener.
Up next, St. Louis heads to Houston for its second CONCACAF matchup with ther Dynamo on Feb. 27. CITY will then host its next regular season game on Saturday, March 2 against New York City FC.
