ST. LOUIS — Cicadas have invaded nearly every neighborhood in the St. Louis metro area. The loud buzzing is the mating call of male cicadas, trying to attract females. This year is particularly bad because two cicada broods are emerging simultaneously. The good news is that it is almost over.

Two Missouri campsites ranked among ‘best in the Midwest’

Missouri is home to four broods of periodical cicadas: Two are the 13-year type, and two are the 17-year type. Ryan Kelly of Rottler Pest Solutions says that this year is particularly significant as both 13-year-old and 17-year periodical cicadas are emerging simultaneously.

Kelly explains that while cicadas are a nuisance, they are harmless to humans and pets, causing only minor damage to plants. Cicadas are currently in a six-week cycle, with about three weeks remaining. For those bothered by cicadas, relief is on the way as they will disappear soon.
