Charges filed in Belleville fatal shooting

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – A Belleville, Illinois, man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting tied to a reported domestic disturbance.

According to a Belleville Police Department spokesperson, officers were notified of a domestic disturbance in the 7300 block of West A Street just after 8:15 a.m. on Monday, May 27. Officers received word of a shooting at that location before they arrived.

Police and EMS arrived at the residence and attempted life-saving measures on the victim but were unsuccessful. The victim was not identified.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and a suspect, identified as Elijah C. Nelson, 22, was taken into custody. Police said they are not looking for any additional suspects in this investigation.

On Tuesday, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Nelson with murder/intent to kill and unlawful use of a weapon. He’ll be transferred to the St. Clair County Jail to await further court proceedings.
