ST. LOUIS – A man accused of stealing from two apartments in a downtown St. Louis building was discovered inside a police officer’s loft while she was moving out on Wednesday.

According to the St. Louis police probable cause statement, Wendell R. Stone, 28, was found stealing from the officer’s apartment located in Lucas Lofts at 1114 Lucas Avenue.

When officers responded to the lofts after a report of a burglary, the officer had been moving out of an apartment on the third floor of the building.

Authorities said as the officer returned to her apartment, she found Stone inside her apartment’s bathroom. Police said Stone was a stranger to the officer and that he did not have permission to be in the building.

The officer detained Stone until additional officers arrived to assist. When police searched Stone, they found a wallet with a credit card and debit card belonging to an additional victim and a key fob belonging to the officer. Police said the wallet and key fob were laying out in the apartment prior to the theft.

Stone appeared in court Friday for an initial appearance for the burglary. He has been charged with first-degree burglary and two counts of stealing.
