CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – Many families are celebrating the first day of school with a sweet treat, and a local cupcake and ice cream business says they’ve had trouble keeping up with the crowds.

At Smallcakes Chesterfield, cupcakes flew off the trays. Natalie Hejna, one of the store managers, said it was crazy when they first opened at 11 a.m. and they even started running low on their fresh cake for the day.

“We kind of guesstimate every morning when I come in to start baking, and we blew through it so quickly already. So, we just pulled out our second round of the day already to help refill what we already sold today,” Hejna said.

Parents and grandparents were out buying a sweet treat to surprise their students after they finished their first day of school.

Customer Cindy Maguire stopped in to get some goodies for her son, who was excited for his first day of 5th grade. She said he’ll be thrilled with the surprise waiting for him when he gets home.

“This is our favorite place on earth. I was just saying I’m not crazy about the word moist, but these are the most moist cupcakes ever. This is definitely our favorite treat,” Maguire said.

While many customers visited in person, some chose another method for the after-school surprise.

“Lots of DoorDashes and Ubers with fun little notes that say, ‘Happy first day of school. Love, auntie and uncle.’ So not only are they coming in, but they’re also ordering it online and having it delivered, so that it’s there when they get home, I guess, and they’re excited about school,” Hejna said.
