ST. LOUIS — Some four thousand people came to the Main Library downtown  on Saturday for Literacy for the Lou. That is the biggest effort by the St. Louis City School District to increase reading proficiency in children.

There were all kinds of activities for kids and their parents, from book giveaways to readings to games and prizes. School officials say this represents their fresh approach to involving not just the schools in increasing literacy for kids but making it  something for the entire city to participate in.

There  is going to be an effort to update the library at the various schools and get books to other places throughout the community. The district will also make additional efforts to get parents the tools they need to increase their children’s reading.

The reading proficiency of the St. Louis Public School District is alarmingly low. Officials hope that this effort will go a long way toward boosting reading proficiency.

School officials say they’re trying to help all the kids in the city, not just those in the St. Louis Public School district.
