ST. LOUIS – As frigid temperatures have left the area, there are two major problems coming in: potholes and water main breaks.
The City of St. Louis Water Division workers were working on the street at Cupples Place and Marcus Avenue after a water main break Tuesday.
Some north St. Louis residents woke up to see an SUV’s wheels completely submerged in a large pothole following a water main break.
“ My neighbor up the street… his car was sticking out of the ground,” Kenneth Hayden, a resident, said. “I’ve been trying to get this street done for about two years.”
The vehicle had to be towed as one of the rear tires was sticking up in the air. Residents say they reported the water main break on Friday, but city crews never responded.
“My neighbor… called the people and told them water was coming out of the street, and there was no response,” Hayden said.
The water division confirmed the water main break was reported a few days ago, but it was a minor problem at the time.
“We’ll send somebody out to take a look… at what kind of consequences it’s causing,” Curt Skouby, director of public utilities, said. “If we can’t address it right away, we’ll throttle back the water but keep it flowing… it’s a way to keep contamination from getting into the pipes until we can come.”
