ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The U.S. Federal Highway Administration is about to put the kybosh on those humorous messages that sometimes appear on electronic signs over Illinois highways.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will no longer be able to put up messages such as “Cousin Eddie says Twitter’s full, put the phone away,” (inspired by National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation) or “No Texting, No Speeding, No Ketchup,” under the new rules.

The signs will be banned because they can be “misunderstood or distracting to drivers” and should be “simple, direct, brief, legible and clear,” according to the Associated Press.

The Federal Highway Administration said the humorous signs often have obscure meanings or pop culture references that may not be understood by all drivers.
