ST. LOUIS – One man died Friday morning after an apartment fire in north St. Louis.

The fire happened in the 8400 block of North Broadway in the Baden neighborhood.

Fire crews responded to the scene just before 11 a.m. A passerby had informed officials of a fire in the second-floor unit of a two-story apartment.

First responders say there wasn’t a large amount of fire, but a considerable amount of smoke inside one unit. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials say the victim was a man, but did not disclose his name or age.

Garon Mosby, captain of the St. Louis Fire Department, says the fire appears to be accidental in nature and the victim might have been cooking food prior to the fire.

Mosby added, based on preliminary findings, this doesn’t appear to be an incident of using a stove to heat the unit, and nothing foul or unlawful is suspected in connection with the fire.

Some nearby apartments are dealing with an odor from the smoke, but it doesn’t appear any other apartments suffered significant fire damage.

This is a developing story. FOX 2 will update as more information becomes available.
