ST. LOUIS – There’s yet another reunion coming for the 2024 St. Louis Cardinals. Veteran infielder Matt Carpenter rejoins the team on a one-year deal.
Carpenter, a three-time All-Star who spent 11 seasons with the Cardinals, returns on a one-year deal to presumably serve as a bench player and mentor for younger hitters.
The Cardinals opened a roster spot for Carpenter late Thursday by transferring pitcher James Naile to the Korea Baseball Organization.
“When you think of players that helped shape our success in the 2000s, Matt Carpenter’s name is one that is synonymous with winning,” said Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak on Carpenter’s return via a news release. “Matt showed from the very beginning of his career how hard work and determination can lead to success, and we are excited to have his leadership and experience back in a Cardinals uniform.”
Carpenter has compiled a .260/.367/.451 slash line over his MLB career with 175 HRs, 644 RBI and 1,225 hits, much of that done with the Cardinals.
Carpenter departed St. Louis in 2021, and has since spent time with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres. He was moved to the Atlanta Braves in an offseason trade, but released quickly afterwards.
Carpenter adds a left-handed bat to the Cardinals roster with strong plate discipline. He’s also proven versatile throughout his career with ample work at first base, second base and third base.
