ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A St. Louis man is due in court in approximately six weeks for allegedly passing a bad check at a popular local furniture store.
According to the Maryland Heights Police Department’s probable cause statement, the crime occurred on Jan. 9, 2024, at Carol House Furniture.
Police said Isaac Zait (age not provided) and a female accomplice picked out several pieces of furniture worth $9,021.64 and paid with a check allegedly tied to an account belonging to a business on Clayton Avenue in Dogtown. The check was later returned from the bank as a forgery.
The address listed on the check belonged to a Jewish religious center and not a private business. Because Carol House requires a copy of a customer’s ID when paying by check, authorities reviewed that information to try and find Zait.
Unfortunately, the license number on the ID does not exist in Missouri, police said, and there is no record of a Missouri driver’s license issued in Zait’s name.
Zait was eventually tracked down and arrested at a Maryland Heights hotel, police said. His female accomplice was located in the custody of the Women’s Eastern Regional Diagnostic and Corrections Center in Vandalia. She was eventually paroled and arrested by Maryland Heights police.
The accomplice’s phone was seized, and investigators found a photograph of a blank check matching the check number, account number, and routing number of the check presented at Carol House.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Zait with one count of forgery. He was issued a criminal summons and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 5.
