FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — Illinois residents can now renew driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations at self-service kiosks in select grocery stores across the state, offering a new alternative to visiting DMV offices.

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is piloting 15 “Fast-Lane” kiosks in Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco, Kroger, Ruler Foods, and Meijer stores. The kiosks can process driver’s license and state ID renewals, as well as vehicle registration stickers, with most transactions taking about two minutes.

Vehicle registration stickers print immediately at the kiosk, while renewed licenses and IDs will be mailed within 15 business days. Users will receive a temporary document in the meantime. To use the service, drivers need their renewal notice, which includes a unique bar code and PIN. The service costs $4.95 per transaction plus any applicable credit card fees.

Not all DMV services are available at the kiosks. New applications, including REAL ID requests, still require an in-person DMV visit for identity verification.

Intellectual Technology Inc., which operates similar kiosks in 17 other states, runs the program.

Kiosk locations include six Chicago sites, six suburban locations, and three downstate locations in East Peoria, Springfield, and Fairview Heights. A complete list of locations is available at www.ilsos.gov/kiosks.
