CEDAR COUNTY, Mo. — Ryan Young of Buffalo, Missouri, has set a new state record for black buffalo fish, catching a 55-pound, 9-ounce specimen at Stockton Lake on October 13. The catch surpasses the previous rod-and-reel record of 53 pounds, which had stood since 1989.

Young, who was originally fishing for crappie with guide Kris Nelson, unexpectedly hooked the massive fish during their outing. It took approximately 30 minutes and the efforts of three men to bring the fish into the boat.

The black buffalo is a species of sucker fish, known for inhabiting the bottom of lakes, rivers, and streams. These fish primarily feed on invertebrates and plants, and are notable for their significant biomass in Missouri’s waterways.

This record-breaking catch marks the fifth state record fish recorded in Missouri in 2024. The Missouri Department of Conservation recognizes state records in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods.

Young expressed surprise at his achievement, stating, “I’m just in shock. It just shows you never know what you’ll catch when you head out.”
