ST. LOUIS – A carjacking suspect who later stole a police SUV on Friday evening has been charged and identified.

According to a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, things began around 7 p.m. Friday night as District officers responded to a reported stolen vehicle in the 3400 block of Oregon Avenue in the Gravois Park neighborhood.

Investigators believe the stolen vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, was later used in a carjacking around 8:30 p.m. that occurred in the 2700 block of Keokuk Avenue in the Dutchtown neighborhood.

The victim told officers that two people, possibly in their teens, got out of a Silverado armed with guns. One of the armed individuals struck the victim in the head before both suspects stole the victim’s Chevrolet Cruze.

District 1 officers saw the stolen Silverado in the area of Oregon and Meramec around 9:30 p.m. Officers attempted to pull the truck over when it fled.

Police said they followed the Silverado to the 2900 block of Cherokee, where three people ran from the truck. Officers ran after and apprehended one of the suspects, identified as Ruben Oseguera, 23. Police also recovered two guns, one of which had been reported stolen in St. Peters.

Oseguera was handcuffed and placed in the back of a marked police vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe. Police said officers were standing near the vehicle when Oseguera somehow got his hands in front of him, climbed into the front seat, and drove off.

Police tracked the stolen Tahoe to Osage Street and Illinois Avenue, where they found Oseguera had crashed the SUV into a tree. Oseguera was again taken into custody and brought to the hospital for treatment.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Oseguera with stealing a motor vehicle and escaping custody.
