ST. LOUIS — The annual fall foliage prediction map for 2024 is now available from SmokyMountains.com. The map, which began as a side project in 2013, has become a reliable tool for millions of travelers planning their autumn trips to areas like Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Asheville, and Boone. You can also see what the leaves will look like in your neck of the woods.

The 2024 map maintains the same core functionality as previous years, with the company focusing on gathering more user data to enhance future predictions. Despite changes in leadership, the map continues to rely on the foundational work of David Angotti, the original creator and a statistical expert with a background in meteorology.

The prediction model combines historical data, weather forecasts, tree types, and user-submitted information to estimate peak fall colors across the United States. In 2022, the company introduced a feature allowing users to submit real-time leaf reports. Last year, they added the ability for users to include photos with their reports. These additions have helped improve the accuracy of the predictions and will continue to refine future models.
