Police investigating two weekend homicides in St. Louis City

ST. LOUIS – Two people are dead after two separate murders over the weekend in the city of St. Louis.

Homicide detectives are investigating both killings, with one happening early Sunday morning and the other taking place on Saturday evening. A person is currently in custody in connection with one of the cases.

The latest murder happened on the 2800 block of Ohio around 3 a.m. Sunday morning in the Benton Park West neighborhood of south St. Louis.

Police say a 69-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene. At this point, police have not released the identity of the man who was shot and killed. Authorities have also not revealed what led to that violence.

Officers arrived at that scene to find a 56-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities say the man was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Several hours earlier, police responded to another shooting on the 700 block of Ponce in the Baden neighborhood of north St. Louis City.

Police got the call around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Authorities say when officers from District 6 arrived at the scene, they found a 27-year-old man who had been shot.

EMS crews rushed the man to the hospital, but he did not survive. Police have identified the man who was killed in this case as 27-year-old Elliott Smith Jr. from north St. Louis County. There is no word on any suspects in this killing.
