ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Earlier this week, residents within St. Louis County reported of sirens sounding when there was no threat or danger. It appears the issue persists for areas of the county.
The malfunctioning sirens were first noted in Affton on Tuesday. Residents in the Fenton area have also reported hearing the noise early Friday morning.
Sgt. Tracy Panus released the following statement Friday regarding the ongoing problem that reads, in part:
“We are aware of multiple outdoor warning sirens across the St. Louis County area emitting alarm tones erroneously over the last few days. There is no cause for alarm or imminent danger. The Emergency Communications Commission technicians and the siren service vendor are working to determine and address the issue causing these false soundings. In the meantime, be assured that we are doing everything we can to prevent further false soundings.”

In January 2012, St. Louis County implemented a new $7.5 million outdoor warning system with 204 sirens. This project was funded by an Emergency Communications Sales Tax and is part of a larger $100 million initiative to unify police, fire, and EMS communications systems.
The new sirens provide immediate status feedback, enabling faster repairs. However, weather alert radios are still recommended for indoor use.
