ST. CHARLES, Mo.  – Food insecurities continue to follow many families across the St. Louis region.

Volunteers braved the rainy Tuesday morning to get food to the SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital to help those struggling with hunger.

“The weather slowed it down a little bit today, but the cars have started to pick up, and we’re filling those cars with food,” SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital Ministry President Jake Brooks said.

Cars began pulling in as early as 7 a.m., hoping to bring plenty of food back to their families. The hospital has an important partnership with the St. Louis area food bank that allows them to feed the hungry.

“The food bank provides pallets of food, and then volunteer staff volunteers their time to give out that food to the community,” Regional Director of Community Health for SSM Health Karen Bradshaw noted.

One event typically serves 150 households, or 300 people, according to Bradshaw. On average, 150 to 180 children receive food from these events as well.

The next event will be held on Oct. 15 at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital on South Grand Boulevard.
