ST. LOUIS – Former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Matt Adams will sign a one-day deal to retire with the team, he announced on social media Sunday night.
The Cardinals drafted Adams out of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in the 23rd round of the 2009 MLB Draft before making his Cardinal debut in 2012. Adams would go on to play 15 years of professional baseball, seven of which were with the Cardinals.
Nicknamed the ‘Big City,’ Adams earned the name after helping the St. Louis Cardinals win the National League pennant in 2013.
Throughout his career, Adams recorded 624 hits, 118 home runs, 399 RBI, and 297 runs across 856 games. Other than the Cardinals, Adams has had previous stints with the Atlanta Braves, Colorado Rockies, and Washington Nationals, whom he won a World Series with in 2019.
“I’ve been incredibly blessed to be a part of winning teams and strong cultures, and I’m far from finished with the pursuit of success,” Adams said in his retirement announcement. “I look forward to the chance to keep competing and winning, this time from a different point.”
