JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – A mischievous fox was the center of attention at a Jefferson County golf event Friday afternoon, caught on camera stealing golf balls from Crystal Highlands Golf Course.

Photos from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office show a fox running up to a ball, then seemingly using its mouth to snatch it.

“It’s believed this fox may have accomplices and they may have victimized numerous golfers. Rest assured, this wily critter will be found and brought to justice,” said the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said playfully on Facebook.

No injuries were reported from the foxy encounter. The event was the Jefferson Sheriff’s Office Golf Invitational, which is intended to benefit the JeffCo Deputy Welfare Fund.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says foxes are widespread in Missouri, including in rural and suburban areas. Spotting foxes appears to be most common in the Missouri Ozarks, along with the northern and western parts of the state.
