ST. LOUIS – Four weeks into the new school year and St. Louis Public Schools are struggling with student transportation.

A mother of two says her kids have been left stranded several days, forcing her to turn to ride-share services to get her kids to and from school.

Chantel Moore sits on her doorstep day after day, not knowing if her kids will have transportation to school. The Moore family’s bus service was cut this year as the school district faces a multitude of issues.

This year, Moore was given vouchers to use taxi cabs. But on most days, Moore says those taxi’s drivers are a no-show. She has spent hundreds of dollars on ride-sharing services to get her kids to class.

“Come Monday morning, no one showed up,” she said. “I texted the driver and she said, ‘I’m not coming today,’ and I had to Uber (my daughter) home because there was no cab.”

Moore says she has reached out to the district’s transportation hotline and school officials but had no luck.

“I call downtown; the mailbox is full. I’m just trying to make sure the kids get to school,” she said.

The district’s transportation woes began when Missouri Central School Bus ended its contract. The SLPS sent a letter to parents that it was working with its main provider—First Student—to expand bus routes.

“They have got to get a clear line of communication

“Our kids are our most valuable assets. My kids go to good schools; I’m thankful for that,” Moore said. “But I need to be able to know that they got a way to school and a way back.”

FOX 2 reached out to the St. Louis Public School district for comment regarding Moore’s allegations. A spokesperson refused to comment but said transportation issues would be addressed at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
