ST. LOUIS – Labor Day weekend is almost upon us, and there are quite a few things to do around the city.
In University City, they’re preparing and loading up Wednesday for a four-day weekend of racing in St. Louis.
“It’s Friday after work in Lafayette Square, Saturday in Francis Park, (and) Sunday is the final for the American Criterium Cup on The Hill; it’s uphill all the way. Then, we’re back in a new venue in Old Town Florissant, and that will be the final of the Criterium National Series for USA cycling,” Event Director for the Bommarito Audi West County Gateway Cup Mike Weiss said.
Weiss added that the St. Louis Fire Department will be all hands on-deck this weekend due to the nature of the sport.
“We expect 40 or 50,000 people all four weekend (days). It’s lit up at night and stunning to watch. If you’ve never seen something like this—it’s a really hard thing to describe,” he said.
Elite bicycling athletes from around the world aren’t the only thing in town over Labor Day. The Japanese Festival is also making its return to the Missouri Botanical Garden, and soccer is back at CITYPARK as CitySC hosts LA Galaxy Sunday afternoon.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police say they’ll have extra crews and be ready, with a reminder for everyone celebrating over Labor Day weekend.
“Anyone planning to go out, including drinking, we ask you practice safely,” SLMPD Public Information Officer Evita Caldwell said. “That means getting a ride service if you don’t have a designated driver. We want everyone to have a safe Labor Day weekend.”
