ST. LOUIS – The president and CEO of the St. Louis Ronald McDonald House Charities passed away on Sunday. He was 64.

Dan Harbaugh served as the nonprofit’s president and CEO for over 30 years before passing away after a three-time fight against cancer.

In a statement from the nonprofit, Harbaugh was described as the “guiding light” for Ronald McDonald House and left behind a great mark on the charity’s mission and community.

Under his leadership, the nonprofit grew from one location to three Ronald McDonald Houses and supports 92 families in need each night at two of their St. Louis locations.

Additionally, the statement said Ronald McDonald’s Family Room program supports 49,000 families annually across four locations at three of the charity’s hospital partners.

The nonprofit also shared in a statement that Harbaugh was more than just a leader but also a husband, father, mentor, friend, and advocate for ill children and their families.

“His unwavering commitment to providing a home away from home to families when they need it most has been a beacon of hope and progress,” the charity statement said. “His vision, dedication, and compassion have touched the lives of countless individuals, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.”

A celebration of life service for Harbaugh will be held Friday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. at the St. Raphael Archangel Catholic Church.

The Ronald McDonald House recently opened their newest location, the “Grove House,” near Forest Park in June. The new housing campus on Choteau Avenue features 72 bedrooms, which expanded their reach to 92 families each night, according to Ronald McDonald House

In support of Grove House, the charity announced “Meals From The Heart.” The program asks for $375 in donations, which go to prepare “chef-planned” meals for families and provide a grab-and-go option for families with sick children.
