ST. LOUIS – A man is in custody for allegedly shooting a stranger outside an apartment building in north St. Louis.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened on August 8 outside an apartment building in the 5500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, located in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood.
Officers met with the victim, who said he was walking toward the rear of the building when somebody began shooting at him unprovoked. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
Investigators said witnesses helped them identify the suspected shooter as Roy Moorehead, 34. Moorehead, who has a prior conviction for first-degree robbery, was taken into custody near the scene. Shell casings at the scene matched a firearm located on the street near Moorehead’s personal property.
Surveillance video from a nearby gas station allegedly showed Moorehead raising what appeared to be a firearm toward the victim.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Moorehead with first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Moorehead remains jailed without bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court on August 15 for a detention hearing.
