ST. LOUIS – It’s a close finish in the primary election for St. Louis City Sheriff. Initial results show the incumbent, Vernon Betts, has lost to challenger Alfred Montgomery.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting in the City of St. Louis, according to St. Louis election officials, these were the final results:
Vernon Betts (incumbent) – 22,505
Alfred Montgomery – 22,774
According to initial voting results from St. Louis election officials, Betts has lost the race by a margin of only 269 votes. With close results, this is possibly an election that could lead to a recount.
Betts has held the office of St. Louis City Sheriff on the Democratic ticket since since January 1, 2017. In the August 2020 primary, Betts defeated Montgomery with 61% to 27% advantage in election results.
