Lucas Kunce wins Democratic primary for Missouri U.S. Senate seat, AP projects

MISSOURI – Lucas Kunce has won the the Democratic primary for Missouri U.S. Senate, the Associated Press projects.

Kunce wins nomination to run as the Democratic candidate for Missouri U.S. Senate in the November 2024 general election against Republican incumbent Josh Hawley.

This year’s Democratic primary featured four candidates, with Kunce’s most notable challenger being Missouri State Sen. Karla May.

Kunce is a 41-year-old attorney from Independence, Missouri, with 13 years of military experience in the Marines. According to OpenSecrets.org, which follows research in camapign fundraising, Kunce secured at least $10 million in fundraising ahead of the primary election, far larger than any other Democratic primary opponents.

According to his campaign website, Kunce’s priorities include banning stock ownership for members of Congress, breaking up corporate monopolies and ending foreign ownership of agricultural land.

Kunce fell short of Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate to Trudy Busch Valentine in the August 2022 primary elections. Busch Valentine later lost her bid against previous Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who replaced Sen. Roy Blunt upon his retirement.

Hawley, who ran for his U.S. Senate unopposed in the primary, has secured the Republican nomination and is seeking reelection for a seat he first won in 2019.
