ST. LOUIS – For the third time in a week, prisoner processing was halted at the St. Louis Justice Center.

FOX 2 learned that the Division of Corrections received a radio call around 7 a.m. Sunday for an incident in one of the detainee pods.

According to Monte Chambers, a spokesman for the St. Louis Director of Public Safety, several detainees were out of their cells and in the common area, sitting at tables and on the floor.

Staff at the Justice Center got the detainees to re-enter their cells “using a number of tactics, including OC spray,” Chambers said.

The pod was secured by 10 a.m.

Chambers said one member of the correction staff was treated for minor breathing problems at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Public Safety Director Charles Coyle spoke with Reverend Darryl Gray, chairman of the Detention Facilities Oversight Board, by phone regarding the incident.

Detainee processing was temporarily halted from just after 9:30 a.m. until about 3 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation, Chambers said.
