JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Joe Biden’s administration over an executive order that promotes access to voter registration.

U.S. President Joe Biden signed the executive order in 2021, which calls for federal agencies to promote voter registration and participation through methods that are “appropriate and consistent with applicable law.” The order called for websites, online forms, social media platforms and other resources to expand access to information to register to vote.

With his lawsuit, Ashcroft argues that the order represents federal overreach and violates the principles within the U.S. Constitution.

“Missouri has a robust and effective election system in place, and it is the responsibility of the states, not the federal government, to manage voter registration and election procedures,” Ashcroft said. “This executive order undermines state sovereignty and threatens the integrity of our elections. This legal action is not about partisan politics; it is about maintaining the balance of power between the states and the federal government as intended by our Founding Fathers.”

The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, seeks to block the implementation of the executive order, according to a news release from Ashcroft. It argues that the order imposes undue burdens on state election authorities and disregards legal frameworks governing elections.

Documents for Ashcroft’s lawsuit were not immediately made available to FOX 2.
