ST. LOUIS – Families enjoyed their new air conditioning units thanks to Cool Down St. Louis. Firefighters were out, installing new units for those in need Wednesday.

“It is more peaceful…makes me more comfortable,” Jordann Abernathy said.

She didn’t know where to turn when her air conditioner stopped working in the middle of a heat wave.

“I’m trying to call somebody to fix it and ain’t been having the best luck. So I’m happy that we get to cool down,” Abernathy said.

Luckily, she called Cool Down St. Louis, which delivered two new air conditioner units and installed them.

“It got to like 89, 91, 87, 88, 80 while y’all came. That was the coolest that it has been at 80,” said Abernathy.

Abernathy was the first call of the day on Wednesday to the St. Louis Fire Department for A/C. They’re seeing fewer calls to Cool Down St. Louis currently and believe it is because of a big push at the beginning of summer.

“We got ahead of this early and we started getting calls telling people to check their air conditioners and make sure that they work. So we did a lot of installs before it got really hot and really did a hard push on getting people utility assistance,” Chief Dennis Jenkerson, St. Louis Fire Department, said.

Jenkerson urged people to check on their neighbors during the heat wave, especially seniors. He’s also reminded people about utility assistance so no one has to suffer in the heat.

Abernathy said one phone is worth the relief.

“Just use your resources and be on the lookout because it is a lot of people offering stuff because it is so hot,” she said.
