ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals will recall former first-round pick Michael McGreevy on Wednesday to make a spot start against the Texas Rangers, a matchup that will also mark his MLB debut.
McGreevy, 24, is 5-7 with a 4.45 ERA over 20 games started for the Triple-A affiliate Memphis Redbirds this season. He is set to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Rangers.
The promotion comes as the Cardinals acquired starting pitcher Erick Fedde from the Chicago White Sox in a trade on Monday, presumably to enter the rotation in the upcoming days.
The Cardinals rotation has weather through many doubleheaders, bullpen games and rough returns from the starting rotation throughout July, prompting them to recall McGreevy and offer more rest to starting pitchers amid the team’s postseason push.
In a one-on-one interview with FOX 2 in March, McGreevy said he has “totally” been thinking about his push for the big leagues. “Any minor leaguer is going to lie to you and say ‘I don’t think about it too much.’ Everybody thinks about it. It’s been our goal since we can remember.”
Manager Oli Marmol tells FOX 2 on McGreevy, “A guy that you look at his last several outings, he’s done a nice job. He’s been able to navigate some lefty lineups as well. We’re really looking forward to seeing him.”
The Cardinals (54-52) wrap up a three-game home series with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday before a four-game road series against the Chicago Cubs.
