ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Police responded to the 300 block of Bellerive around 10 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a seriously injured woman on the street.  The victim died after she was taken to a hospital.

Investigators initially called the case a hit-and-run crash in St. Louis, but have since said their homicide investigation includes efforts to determine how the victim died.

Some residents in the neighborhood said the victim appeared to have been severely beaten.  The identity of the victim has not been released.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department wants anyone with information to call the department’s homicide division at 314-444-5371 or anyone with a tip who wants to remain anonymous and is interested in a possible reward can contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).

On Thursday afternoon, some residents were still struggling over news of the victim’s death.

“I couldn’t sleep last night because she was just on my porch talking yesterday,” said nearby resident Erna Long.

The investigation is taking place less than a mile from an area where residents recently expressed concerns about gunfire. They reported shots fired at homes near Minnesota and Alabama.

The most recent crime comes in a neighborhood where residents say drug addiction is a problem.  Long just hopes anyone with information about the victim’s death will contact the police.

“You know who did it, so come forward and speak,” she said. “Because the person who did that to her could do that to somebody else.”
