Ferguson man charged with downtown St. Louis shooting

ST. LOUIS – A Ferguson, Missouri, man remains in custody for a shooting over the weekend in downtown St. Louis.

According to a spokesman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened around 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, near Friedrich Schiller Sculpture Park at Market and 14th streets. An off-duty officer notified the department of the shooting.

A 15-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to his right elbow, police said. The boy had been walking on 14th Street with a 45-year-old woman, a 43-year-old man, and another 15-year-old boy when they heard gunfire north of their location.

Meanwhile, a 59-year-old man who was in his vehicle at the red light on Market at 14th heard gunshots, followed by the sound of bullets striking his car.

An officer saw a vehicle speeding away from the area and reported a description of the vehicle to dispatchers. Another officer downtown stopped the vehicle near 18th and Olive streets.


Six businesses broken into in Florissant overnight

The driver, a 31-year-old woman, and passenger, a 28-year-old man, were detained. Police said the off-duty officer who saw the shooting near the sculpture park identified the passenger as the suspect.

The passenger, Jaquan D. Rush, was arrested without incident. Rush, a convicted felon, already had an active probation violation.

The driver was also taken into custody for having active arrest warrants against her.

The 15-year-old shooting victim was treated at the scene and did not have to go to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Rush with second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree property damage, and two counts of armed criminal action. No bond will be allowed for the time being.
