The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office announced last week the state has more than $5 billion in unclaimed property and wants to reunite it with its owners.
According to a press release from State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’s Office, the cash and property is from the state’s I-Cash program. The program “safeguards unclaimed property including unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and unused rebate cards,” the release read.
Thousands of items are reported and remitted annually to the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office and residents are encouraged to check the unclaimed property database twice each year.

According to the treasurer’s office, an estimated one-in-four adults in Illinois who search I-Cash find unclaimed property, and the average claim is $1,000.
