ST. LOUIS — Authorities in Missouri and Illinois are emphasizing safety for those traveling to witness the eclipse. Major highways are expected to experience heavy traffic and officials are urging drivers to stay safe.
The Missouri Highway Patrol has released a list of safety tips for eclipse viewers on the road. Drivers are asked not to stop along interstates or park on shoulders but instead to find a safe location to view the eclipse and arrive early. Taking photographs while driving is discouraged.

As the eclipse approaches, drivers are also reminded to turn their headlights on manually, rather than relying on automatic settings. Increased pedestrian traffic, particularly on smaller roads, is another concern, with officials recommending that travel during the eclipse be avoided if possible.
Some other tips you may want to follow are: Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving or operating a boat. Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas. Bring some water along and snacks for the journey.
