ST. LOUIS – A Midtown St. Louis man is due in court on Monday to face charges for last week’s murder in a north city neighborhood.

The shooting took place around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in the 4600 block of Pope Avenue, located in the O’Fallon neighborhood.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, Julius Y. Massey and another individual were at Massey’s ex-girlfriend’s home and the three of them were drinking.

Police claim Massey and his former partner got into an argument. The third person went into a different room and heard a single gunshot, followed by additional shouting, and finally more gunshots.

This third individual saw Massey leave the home and then found his ex, identified as Payton Winston, dead in the bathroom. Winston was 48.

This person told police he only knew Massey by the nickname “Twin.” Investigators contacted Winston’s daughter, who identified Massey based on the nickname and explained their relationship.

Massey was taken into custody days later. Police claim he admitted to being at the home the night of the shooting.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Massey with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Massey remains jailed without bond.
