Board of Aldermen pushing for red-light cameras

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Board of Aldermen is inching towards passing legislation that would authorize the reintroduction of red-light cameras.

The Missouri Supreme Court struck down the idea of red-light cameras years ago, ruling them unconstitutional. But with recent deadly crashes, aldermen are pushing to take action.

A mother and daughter from Chicago were killed on Valentine’s Day while leaving a Drake concert when a reckless driver ran them over, killing the two.

Just a year prior to that incident, 17-year-old Janae Edmonson lost both her legs after being run over while walking downtown.

Alderman Joe Vollmer says he is all for the cameras, as there is blatant disregard for traffic laws.

“People are too busy on their phones and recreational marijuana while they’re driving; they’re not paying attention to anything,” he said. “There’s no regard for public safety.”

Alderman Rasheen Aldridge has his own red-light camera legislation in committee to secure more safeguards.

“I favor the legislation as long as there is an oversight component to make sure that, as we’re bringing more enforcement and technology, that we also have oversight on our surveillance technology because technology is advancing,” he said.

However, not everyone agrees with the legislation.

“The mayor and many other people are against it… it creates many hurdles and complications for police doing their job,” Alderman Tom Oldenburg said.

Some citizens, like Matt Arthur, have their doubts surrounding the legislation.

“I just don’t think it’s a good idea. When we did have them, it didn’t deter people from running those lights. I think it was a waste of money,” Arthur said.

Board of Aldermen President Megan Green expects the red-light camera legislation to clear the alderman committee within two weeks and pass the full board when session ends in April.
