ROLLA, Mo. – Two wildfires broke out Tuesday in Mark Twain National Forest, according to officials.
Fires were reportedly at Beason Hollow and Barn Log within the forest. The fire at Beason Hollow, around 15 miles southwest of Salem, reached around 650 acres by the end of the day. The fire at Barn Log, 10 miles south of Winona, grew to around 400 acres by night.
Firefighters have contained the two fires as of Thursday morning and are keeping an eye on the area. According to Cody Norris, public affairs officer from Mark Twain National Forest, some smoke may still be visible throughout the day.
With favorable weather conditions Thursday, the forest has one prescribed burn planned around five miles east of Barn Log.
Due to the fires yesterday and a controlled burn today, residents may see some smoke lingering in the air. It is recommended to turn on headlights if you encounter smoky conditions.
