ST. LOUIS – Shoppers in St. Louis were disappointed to hear the news that Macy’s will be closing 150 of its stores.

The retailer plans on closing 50 stores this year, with the remaining closures taking place by the end of 2026.

“It’s completely shocking,” Aundrea Johnson, a Galleria Macy’s customer, said. “It’s one of my favorite stores.”

FOX 2 checked with area mall operators and local government officials to see if they had been notified about any Macy’s stores closing in the St. Louis area. As of Tuesday, they had not.

Company officials have not said which stores will be closing.

“It’s a place where I can go and shop for my entire family in one spot,” Lori Turner, Macy’s customer, said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Slipping sales have contributed to the decision. Macy’s plans include shifting to more luxury options, smaller stores, and adding salespeople to the remaining locations to enhance customer service.

“I think everybody’s moving to online shopping,” Michael Cornwall, Macy’s customer, said.

Some shoppers worry about the effect closures will have, if any, on the stores that are located in malls.
