ST. LOUIS – Pedestrian death cases are on the rise in the St. Louis region. Just this month, several pedestrians have been fatally struck.

There are only a few streetlights in service and one pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Lucas and Hunt Road and New Halls Ferry Road, where a pedestrian was fatally struck Tuesday night.

Community members believe this fatality occurred from excessive speeding along this street.

“It’s dangerous to even try to cross the street to go over to the store or anything,” Dejanill Shearer, an employee in the area, said.

Fatal Ferguson house fire ruled a murder-suicide

St. Louis County Police released data showing there have been over 30 pedestrians who have been fatally hit since 2019, with four of those incidents happening in February 2024. The majority of the fatalities have occurred at night.

“So we had a lady that died right there cause somebody hit her out here. So this is very dangerous,” Shearer said. “These people drive; they have no sense of the speed limit, the cops or anything… I mean, I’m really scared a lot of times just driving on this street.”
