FERGUSON, Mo. – Homicide detectives in St. Louis County have confirmed a fatal fire in Ferguson earlier this week is being classified as a murder-suicide.

The fire happened just before 4:30 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of North Clay Avenue.

Firefighters found the bodies of a woman and four children inside the residence, along with three dogs. Fourteen rabbits, three chickens, and two cats survived the fire thanks to quick-thinking neighbors.

The victims were identified as Bernadine Pruessner, 39, and her four children: Ellie and Ivy Pruessner, 9-year-old twins; Jackson Spader, 6; and Miller Spader, 2. Ellie and Ivy attended Mason Ridge Elementary in the Parkway School District.

Investigators believe that Bernadine intentionally set a mattress on fire and identified that as the point of origin for the blaze. A note was also left, stating Bernadine’s intentions to take her life and the lives of her children.

They all died from smoke inhalation and the fire.

Police have not disclosed a potential motive for the mother’s actions.
