Fish Fry Friday continues despite winter weather

BRENTWOOD, Mo. – Mother Nature made things a bit messy for Catholics on the first Friday of Lent. Some in the area had to cancel their fish fries for the evening, but for the parish of St. Mary Magdalen, the show must go on.

People lined up for what they call ‘God’s cod’ Friday. The action started at 4:30, which is when the drive-thru opened.

“We won’t cancel because the fish has been thawed and prepared for tonight,” Robi Montz, parishioner, said. “We’ll have people lined up and a great time tonight. Probably do about 250 cars in three hours time, down to a car a minute.”

St. Mary Magdalen has held their fish fry in the gymnasium for the last 17 years, but during Covid, they learned how to become more efficient with a drive-thru line.

Cars lined up off South Brentwood Boulevard behind the church to receive their orders.

The fish fry is a big fundraiser for the church and brings a sense of community to those who show up to eat some gumbo, hush puppies, and cod filets.

The fish fry is open until 7:30 p.m. Friday, accepting both cash and card. To find other fish fries around the area, click here.
