KIRKWOOD, Mo — On Thursday, Kirkwood City Council voted down the sale of a stretch of West Jefferson Avenue. The Archdiocese originally offered to buy a portion of the road for $1 million to connect St. Peters Catholic Church and the school campuses.

“There is a lot of distracted driving, a lot of speeding, the lighting is not really great at night and I feel as though this is to me a core safety issue,” said Travis Rodden, a Kirkwood resident.

Dozens of residents spoke out on both sides of the issue Thursday night. People who want the city to keep the road open said there are other ways to keep kids safe without closing a major arterial road. They said another concern is about parking.

“In sum, I think it’s a bad idea and I urge you to vote no on it. I think it’s a bad idea because voting yes means rejecting certain key facts. First, creating dozens of traffic spots on the west side of Clay while taking out parking on the east side will create a traffic mess,” said Mike Fitzgerald, resident.
