Does Missouri have the death penalty?

ST. LOUIS – After the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting Wednesday afternoon, Google Trends showed people were searching to see if Missouri still had the death penalty.

According to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes, “The manner of inflicting the punishment of death shall be by the administration of lethal gas or by means of the administration of lethal injection.”

So, in short, yes, the death penalty still exists in Missouri.

According to an article from the Associated Press, four of the 24 executions throughout the country last year took place in Missouri. The first for 2024 is scheduled for April 9.

Last month, some Missouri lawmakers sponsored a bill that would abolish the death penalty.

Since 1989, there have been 100 people executed in Missouri, with 18 currently sitting on death row.
