NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. – A Missouri lawmaker is looking to keep a major U.S. aluminum smelter plant in New Madrid County operating.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, about 450 workers’ jobs are in jeopardy at the ‘Magnitude-Seven’ metals plant. Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade filed a bill to provide cheaper energy to fuel the  plant. Right now, it’s coal-powered.

Insurance companies return $27.5 million to Missourians

The Mag-Seven plant is the largest single consumer of energy in Missouri; it uses as much electricity as Springfield, the state’s third largest city.
