WOOD RIVER, Ill. – Emergency crews are responding to a fatal house fire in Wood River, Illinois.
The fire broke out at a home on the 800 block of State Street. Firefighters responded to a call around 5:14 a.m., where crews were initially trying to enter the front of the home but were unable to due to the heavy smoke.
After entering the back of the home, a firefighter found one person dead on the left side. The call first came in as an elderly woman, possibly trapped inside a burning home. Several departments are still at the scene, investigating.
So far, the identity of the victim has not been reported. FOX 2 will update these stories with more information as it becomes available.
